Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular condition that occurs when the piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve. This can lead to pain, tingling, and numbness that radiates from the lower back down the leg, often mimicking sciatica.

What causes Piriformis Syndrome?

The condition is typically caused by muscle tightness, overuse, trauma, or anatomical variations that put excess pressure on the nerve. It can affect athletes, individuals with sedentary lifestyles, or those who engage in repetitive movements that strain the hip and gluteal muscles. Underlying issues that can predispose one to developing piriformis syndrome include:

  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Congenital anomalies with the piriformis muscle
  • Sacral fractures
  • Scar tissue from prior trauma or ongoing biomechanical dysfunction
  • Gluteus medius muscle weakness related to a tendon tear or other muscle imbalance in the pelvis and hips
