Hip Osteoarthritis & Joint Pain

What causes Hip Osteoarthritis & Joint Pain?

Hip osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease of the hip. Characterized by the loss of cartilage and fluid surrounding the hip joint, the condition results in pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of strength that tends to worsen over time without effective medical intervention. Although the exact cause is unknown, several factors can increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis. These variables include:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Obesity
  • Structural or developmental abnormalities
  • Family history
  • Injury / overuse
  • A previously existing condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout

Symptoms of Hip Osteoarthritis & Joint Pain

Osteoarthritis-related hip pain can emerge on the inside or outside of the hip joint and often extends to the thigh, groin, and buttocks. Although actual symptoms depend on the underlying cause, individuals with hip pain may experience:

  • Pain or discomfort that worsens with activity
  • Groin or buttock discomfort
  • Bursitis pain at the outside of the hip / thigh.
  • Limping
  • Stiffness and limited range of motion
  • A popping noise
  • A dull ache
  • A locking sensation

Diagnosing Hip Osteoarthritis & Joint Pain

The Orthohealing Center is committed to providing patients with a conclusive diagnosis of their respective conditions or injuries. To do this, an initial physical and verbal intake will be conducted. During this process, patients are asked how the injury was sustained and about the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms. The affected region is examined for tender areas / pain, reflexes, strength, and range of motion. Our physicians frequently order advanced imaging studies such as MRI or ultrasound to assess baseline status and monitor treatment results.
